Bookkeeper Nicky is in today & already a meeting to discuss the financial affairs of The One Mired In Venality. Anyone familiar with building work knows well, that burning money on the pavement is only a short step ahead of getting in the builders, as a reliable strategy for reducing one’s solvency. The kitchen extensions at World HQ + Maison Slinky & Fripp in Bredonborough are both useful pieces of construction and, not unreasonably, Big Cheese Builders Inc. proffer their invoices in anticipation of payment. A Guitar Craft course, of whatever size, and tour of Churchscapes, will not support Mr. Big Cheese the Builder’s love of antique motor cars, nor Dave’s aspirations as an ambient musician, nor Kevin’s interest in regular meals.

Presently, the Morning shift with Mr. Stormy & Robert in DGM SoundWorld II…

Soundscapes Do Dixie – The Beginning! at Carrboro Arts Center, North Carolina, on February 21st. 2006.

11.18    Ben Crowe of Crimson Guitars is recently arrived, just leaving, carrying away two vintage Les Pauls for display in his booth at the London Guitar Show.

One of these is the guitar used on all KC albums 1969-74, from In The Court Of The Crimson King to Red. I bought this from a guitar shop on Shaftesbury Avenue c. November 1968 during a Crimson gear acquisition sortie, carrying a briefcase of banknotes drawn from the loan to KC by Angus Hunking, Ian Mac’s uncle. The salesperson struck me as rather a weaselly character. We could sell that to Eric Clapton! he claimed. That being the case, I wondered, why is the black 1959 Les Paul still in the shop window? A generous opportunity to put classic instruments within reach of lesser known players? I bumped into Mr. Weasel some 2 or 3 years later, working not far away.

The second Les Paul (also black & 1959) I bought in late 1972/early 1973 on Denmark Street, as a spare; and was told it had been owned by Steve Marriot. This replaced a newer model Les Paul, used on the road with Crimson in Autumn 1972 (Jamie Muir on percussion) which, although good, didn’t compare with classic 1959.
